About this Workshop

Description

Join this Workshop to learn the ancient craft of Macrame, brought to America by Spanish settlers hundreds of years ago, during colonial times.

In our Workshop, we will craft a beautiful macrame bracelet, using a natural fiber called cabuya, which comes from the cabuya plant.  It is extracted in the plush Costa Rican mountainside and then worked by hand to result in the fiber we will use in our Workshop.  In our country, there is only one person who still has this knowledge - he is a dedicated eighty year old master who works tirelessly to preserve our Cabuya Macrame tradition: the one and only Don Martina.

During our Workshop, you will learn the “knot technique”, some interesting facts about the history of Costa Rica, and perhaps even some words in Spanish.  Best of all, you will have a cabuya fiber macrame bracelet, to be worn proudly around your wrist or ankle.

If you have ever made a bracelet out of thread or have wanted to, then this Workshop will be great for you!  Working with cabuya is easy and fun as the fiber wants to hold it's shape.  Children under 10 would do best if they have an adult participate with them.

I’m looking forward to meeting you in our one-of-a-kind Cabuya Fiber Macrame Workshop!

All my life, I have loved working with my hands.

Growing up in Costa Rica, my favorite things have always been nature and art.  I live in a small town called Palmares, surrounded by coffee plants, fruit trees, and wild animals.  Inspired by the beauty in my own backyard, my favorite materials to work with are cabuya, natural seeds, and the gemstones that are found in the mountains, in the heart of my beloved country.

As a child, I was always looking for something to make.  In school, I expressed my love of art by taking traditional art classes.  I continued exploring art in high school, by taking classes there too.  At that time, my family moved to New York City.  There, I enrolled in BOCES, a specialized program where I dedicated my life to art, design, and photography.  Upon moving back to Costa Rica I then attended Instituto Nacional de Aprendizaje and the Escuela Casa del Artista.  Always an adventurer, I’ve spent time traveling around Costa Rica and Nicaragua, where I was inspired by the world’s most colorful local and international artists.

I am a mother of two beautiful girls who love art, every form of it.  I am so excited to teach and share my knowledge and my culture.

Wonderful instructor and section

by James on

The instructor was delightful, the materials were unique and the kids love wearing the final product. The session included a nice mix of background and history on the products, connection to the people that made the materials and general discussion - in addition to the direct instruction on making the bracelets. Highly recommend.

Bracelet workshop

Great experience. Would have loved to been able to talk and learn more about her culture but it was a little difficult for the kids to figure out the bracelet making so our time was up. Having some visual aids sent with the kit might be helpful. Would definitely do this again.
