About this Workshop

Description

In this Workshop, Learners will make a traditional elephant wall hanging inspired by Lord Ganesha, the Hindu deity of new beginnings, success and wisdom.

Lord Ganesha is an important figure in Hindu culture, and one of the most important festivals we have every year is to celebrate his birthday.  Ganesha is an elephant-headed god who helps to remove obstacles in life, and represents strength, power and stability.  In India, hanging elephants in your home is a way to harness his powers to bring good fortune, protection, and to promote love and fidelity in the space.  It is typically hung near the door with the elephants facing inwards. It is believed that it protects the house and family by making sure no evil can pass through, as a way to maintain positivity and safety within the home.

In addition to the importance of the elephant in this wall hanging, the thread we will use symbolizes protection and long life against enemies.  Also, the bell and tassel which is hung at the bottom end of the craft is considered auspicious when rung, as it welcomes divinity and dispels evil.

I am excited to meet you and make these elephant wall hangings together!

Please note: This Workshop is recommended for ages 6+ with parents helping hands.

Prachi GandhiView Profile

Hi, my name is Prachi.  I am from India, but I was raised in Tokyo, Japan, where I still live today.  My favorite time of year in Japan is the Cherry Blossom season, when the trees are filled with so many pink flowers and are absolutely beautiful to look at!

I have enjoyed crafting since I was a child.   When I was twelve years old I made a traditional flower bouquet which was very special to me, as I gifted it to my parents.  It was a super fun experience, and it inspired me to continue exploring my creativity.  Since then, every year during the Indian New Year’s celebration, which is known as Diwali, I make candle stands by paper quilling and I absolutely love it.

I am so happy to be a GLOMADO Instructor, because I believe it is extremely important that people have an awareness and appreciation of the different cultures of the world, and that learning traditional crafts is a fun way for children to achieve this goal.  I am so excited to meet you and share my culture with you!
