About this Workshop

Description

Welcome to your little Moroccan Hogwarts!

This workshop will teach you how to make your own little charm bottles that you can keep as a beautiful decoration in your room to bring positive energy.  The exciting part is that when they are opened they release beautiful Moroccan scents that will boost your energy and make you feel very relaxed!

These types of lucky charm potions are present in almost every Moroccan house.  When guests are coming the potion is opened to release a beautiful smell.  Sometimes, if you might be feeling sad, it can be the best mood booster you can have around you.  Traditionally these potions have been believed to protect owners from the evil eye and welcome kind and peaceful spirits into the house. These traditions were started a long time ago by the Berbers — an amazing people of Morocco who had such a rich culture. In fact it is through their traditions that much of the culture in our region was preserved.  The act of placing scented bottles by the front door was also seen in Moor traditions.

These potions are still made today.  Growing up in Morocco all children learn how to make this kind of lucky potion.  In primary school we each made one as a project and then put it in our rooms.  I still remember my mom helping me make mine to perfection.  Every time we would go to someone's house the first thing to check was how well done and good smelling their lucky charm was, so it was something I was very proud of.  Each person will personalize their lucky charm in their own way, so looking at someone’s charm is a way to get to know them.

I teach this project to all the travelers that come to my house and when they leave they are able to take their own homemade lucky charm potion with them!  I love making this project with them and seeing how each one of them will bring their own history and personality to the project.  I am excited to make a lucky charm potion with you and to see how you create yours!

Please note: This Workshop is recommended to ages 6+

Bilal AljiView Profile

Like we say in Morocco, every day it's a celebration! Our crafts here are timeless.

I am Bilal and I always loved sharing my culture with different people and travelers from around the world, so having the opportunity to teach to a younger generation makes me so happy!  Morocco is not the most famous country and a part of our cultures is almost forgotten so I want to make it alive again!

I grew up in a small northern city of Morocco where it was hard for me to start an artistic career.  At the age of 8, I started doing magic and dance, which combined my love of theater (I had been in theater since age 4).  Going on stage wasn't really a challenge for me, and helped me build self-confidence and self-independence, especially that I'm a self-taught artist.  At the age of 15, I made my first professional magic show in Nador and 600 people attended it.  The next year I started taking classes with an international multilingual theater lab, Instant Mix, to help me improve my acting and stage performance skills.  From there, I've opened myself up to different arts like singing, piano playing, drawing, fashion designing etc — nothing is better than a polyglot and multi-talented artist!   Now, I'm still building up my professional project and finishing my studies to be able to build a strong career that I've always wanted.

I have been crafting since the age of 4 when we started in kindergarten! I was always excited because crafts were so fun and easy to do!  Growing up loving those crafts, I decided to make more as decorations and made a lot to put all around my house!  I will definitely remember the day I made my first RED bracelet with the Fatima hand!  I still have it now!

In terms of art I love everything related to nature, like plants or natural scents or even wood!  Spices and medicinal plants are a go-to for my crafts!

I am excited to meet you — I love meeting new people, and creating and sharing my arts!  I live as one with the society surrounding me.  Moroccans are very social!

Lucky Charm Potion

He was very nice. The kids enjoyed the workshop.

Easy and fun

by Sandra on

Easy to follow instructions and no messes! The kids really enjoyed it. They did it at school on two different days. We partnered each learner with a student helper each time. All students had the chance to be a helper and to be a learner. The only thing is that kids didn't have a flower to put in their potion as it is winter time where we are. It's part of the required materials to have that does not come in the kit.

Hi Sandra- thank you so much for your review!  We are so glad that you students enjoyed making Lucky Potions with Bilal in Morocco.  While choosing their own flower is a lovely part of the Workshop when the season allows, we agree that this might not be possible in the winter!  Bilal will now be including a dried flower in all of his GLOkits.  Thank you for making this note!  We really appreciate you and your students being part of our Workshops!
