About this Workshop

Description

During our workshop, we will make three natural beeswax candles.  We’ll make the first one for practice, just to get to know the process.  Once you are comfortable with the technique, we will make another two. Then, you will have a chance to make a wish for yourselves, and offer good luck to others.

Since ancient times, candles have been an integral part of peoples’ lives.  In Slavic culture, they are used to light homes, and for making wishes and healing.  In many fairy tales, we find stories in which candles are used to help people (especially kids) to find their way home, to ask the Universe for good luck, or to share secret signals with friends.

Beeswax candles are very popular in Latvia.  During any art and craft fair here, you can buy different kinds of candles, all made out of beeswax.  I was taught to make this kind of candle about five years ago, by a lady from Russia. I found making these candles to be simple, but meaningful and fun.  Here in Latvia, I now teach others how to make them.

You can make beeswax candles any time you like, but according to our traditions, there are certain times of the year when candles are most powerful.  Candles made at the beginning of February (02,02,2020 for example), and on full and new moons, are believed to be the most magical.

When you make your beeswax candles, you’ll enjoy holding the natural beeswax, that has come all the way from Latvia.  You will especially love the scent. As we make the candles we will quiet our mind and focus our attention - a little meditation.

This workshop is great for children and adults of all ages.

Hi! I am Tanya. I live on a farm in Latvia.  What I love most about living on a farm is the fresh air I can breathe, the meadows I can walk, the goats I can raise, and the garden I tend to.  I also get to swim in my own pond, walk in my forest, and watch flowers growing.

In my art, I enjoy working with many different materials.  When I was a child, I used to like designing postcards. I used to felt (which means to make things out of felt) jewelry and shoes.  I've also learned how to make beeswax candles and textile dolls, and in the process, cotton and beeswax have become my favorite materials to work with.

Highly highly recommend this workshop! Tanya was such a delight to meet and chat with. My boys loved making the candles and putting their wishes into the candles. Thank you so much, Tanya, for this unique experience.

So much fun !!!

by Stephanie on

I truly loved this workshop. I've never been a "crafting" person, but Tanya made this so fun and engaging! What I enjoyed the most was Tanya's warm, inviting personality and approach to the workshop. She not only made me feel at ease as a first-time crafter, but shared the cultural background about candle making. She also was incredibly warm and encouraging as she coached me through the workshop. I thoroughly enjoy my candles and they are a warm reminder that I am a part of a global community.

Great Cultural Experience

by Matthew on

We really enjoyed this workshop. Tanya was friendly and informative, not just about candle making but also Latvia and its culture. The candle making was easy and accessible, and was enhanced by a spiritual/mediative component that made the workshop about more than just crafts. It was a global cultural experience that we'd highly recommend for all ages.

Simple, sweet, and fun

by Amber on

My 10 year old daughter really enjoyed this workshop. While making the candles, the instructor added an (optional) opportunity to make a wish or state an intention before completing the candle, and my daughter thought that was really fun and special. Tanya shared a little bit about her country, and even shared that her mother has the same name as my daughter which just delighted her. As soon as the class was finished, my daughter asked me to purchase materials to make many more candles for her friends and family as gifts (Tanya's awesome suggestion). The activity is likely not robust enough for adults, but it's absolutely perfect for children of all ages and abilities.
