About this Workshop

Description

In this Workshop, you will be creating one of the most traditional crafts we have here in Guatemala, a Worry Doll.

The Worry Doll or "Muñeca Quita Penas" is a small souvenir many people buy when coming to Guatemala.  Worry Dolls are a Guatemalan tradition, which originated with Mayan beliefs that the dolls could take your worries away.  The secret is to put them under your pillow, and by the morning your worries will be gone!

Artisans of various Mayan communities have taught me how to create these dolls, which are so important in our culture.  The technique involves using your hands and thread, and a minimal amount of glue, to make the base firm. The kit contains authentic Mayan pieces of fabric to decorate your doll.

These dolls are quite common  in Guatemala. When I was five years old, I remember reading the small note that came with them, stating: "put me under your pillow, and I will take all your worries away in the morning".  It is by tradition that almost every kid will have these dolls and know them as a part of our Guatemalan culture and story.

Ana LynchView Profile

My name is Ana and I am originally from Panajachel, Guatemala.  My town borders the most beautiful lake in the world!  Lake Atitlan has three beautiful inactive volcanoes and twelve small towns around it.  Guatemala has an amazing culture based on many Mayan Traditions.

I started to craft at a young age.  There are many artisans and craftsmen in my town that have shown me the basics of crafting.  I am really excited to share my traditions with others, as each of my crafts tell a story.  It is part of the culture, and I find it fascinating not only to tell the story but to actually show my students a visualization.

In terms of materials, I like to work with Mayan textiles, as it makes the work more authentic.

When I am not crafting, my favorite thing to do in town is to go down by the lake around five in the afternoon to watch the sun go down behind the three volcanoes.

We Loved This Workshop!

by Jennifer on

All the kids and adults who took this workshop really enjoyed it. My eight year-old made two dolls - one for herself, and one for her grandmother. My five year-old needed lots of assistance, but was able to make his own sweet worry doll with my help. He wanted to make a boy doll, which maybe could be a choice in the future. Our Instructor was very patient and kind, and did a wonderful job of passing on the beautiful folklore of worry dolls.

Fun workshop with Ana!

We had a wonderful time learning to make Worry Dolls with Ana. Her workshop was both fun and informative. She was great at improvising with my 4 year old son who took pride in his creation and can't wait to put his doll under his pillow tonight. Thank you!
