About this Workshop

Description

In this Workshop I will introduce you to the beautiful clothing that dates back to the first century of our Common Era in Latvia through creative play with paper dolls.  Nowadays we wear these clothes for special occasions and celebrations.  You will have a chance to cut out your own paper doll and all her clothing and use your imagination to color them.  I will tell you a story about a Latvian princess, how she lived, what celebrations she shares in her culture and her everyday life.  Let's embark on this journey together!

By making these paper dolls and learning about our history, you can discover how girls and "princesses" in Latvia used to dress up during celebrations and special occasions.  Each district has its own specific costumes that represent their relationships with their family and neighboring countries, wealth and social status.  They are colorful and beautiful pieces of art.

Latvian culture is so rich and the paper dolls are a perfect way for the young generation to learn more about the incredible clothing Latvian girls used to wear and make for themselves.  This is a special toy because it unites generations—grandmas remember their early memories of creating paper dolls as well as mothers and now young daughters have the opportunity to play together with their family and friends with this simple yet educational and creative toy that encourages imagination, develops motor skills and brings a well-deserved rest from the modern digital environment.  Back to basics!

Daina ElksneView Profile

Hi, my name is Daina and I come from a culture-full country called Latvia.

I have been crafting since my childhood - I remember when my siblings and cousins used to design and make clothing from paper sheets.  We would cut and glue them together to create unique looks, and then create a fashion show for our parents and grandparents to enjoy.

Here in Latvia we have a lot of traditional crafts that our culture shares.  For example, during the Summer Solstice (celebration of fullness and richness of nature) we create special flower crowns to wear on that day and there is a special pattern to follow as the way you create your crown reveals your character.

I love the strong culture we have as it unites all Latvians both from Latvia and abroad, especially during Latvian Traditional celebrations.  I love our wild nature and appreciate that we have all four seasons.

Pictured with me is my friend, Latvian artist Agnese Furmane, who designed the paper doll kits that are used in my Workshop.
